Jordi Liongola injury update as Sheffield Wednesday absence continues for summer signing

Jordi Liongola was absent for the sixth game running as Sheffield Wednesday drew 0-0 with Wigan Athletic at Hillsborough on Saturday.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Henrik Pedersen has confirmed that summer signing Jordi Liongola is making good progress in his recovery from a hamstring injury but has admitted that his return is not imminent.

The Burundi international, who joined the Owls from Belgian club RAAL La Louvière in June, has missed the last six matches after suffering a hamstring injury in training ahead of Wednesday’s 1-0 defeat to Bradford City at Hillsborough last month.

Liongola, who is a versatile operator, started the Owls’ opening two games of the season, helping them beat Bolton Wanderers 1-0 in the first round of the Carabao Cup and Leyton Orient 2-1 in their League One opener, respectively.

The 26-year-old was excellent on his debut against Bolton, bringing a blend of defensive and attacking qualities to the side. His speed also provided Wednesday with something different compared with what they currently have available to them.

Although he remains sidelined, Pedersen has shared an encouraging update, revealing that Liongola is showing signs of being ahead of schedule in his recovery.

“It’s going really, really well,” the Owls boss told The Star. “He’s moving ahead like we want, maybe a little bit in front. So it’s really good.

“I still think it will be three or four weeks before we see him.”

Meanwhile, Pedersen also confirmed that fellow absentee Max Lowe is making progress with his ongoing recovery. Lowe has missed the last four matches because of a hamstring problem of his own.

Pedersen added: “It's going really well, but there will still be some weeks before he can really speed up.”
