Sheffield Wednesday could face another League One postponement after upcoming fixtures cancelled

Sheffield Wednesday might find themselves experiencing another sizeable gap between League One fixtures in November.

Sheffield Wednesday could see their League One clash with Plymouth Argyle at Hillsborough in November postponed because of the second international break of the season.

The Owls, who have won their last three games against Argyle without conceding a goal, are currently scheduled to welcome Tom Cleverley’s team to S6 on Saturday, November 14.

However, that fixture falls in the middle of the November international break, meaning there is a high possibility that it will be called off and need to be rescheduled for a later date.

Despite League One not being temporarily paused during international windows, the Owls have had their trip to Stevenage, originally scheduled for this Saturday, called off, as well as their Hillsborough showdown with Cambridge United, which was due to take place on Saturday, October 3.

It means Wednesday are not back in League One action until they travel to Huddersfield Town on Saturday, October 10.

Clubs in League One and League Two are able to postpone league fixtures if three or more players are included in their international squads. Wednesday comfortably met that threshold after Yan Valery, Sean Fusire, Kieran Morrison, Harry Gray, Will Grainger and Ali Al-Hamadi all received call-ups from their respective nations for the current break.

However, Al-Hamadi has since been forced to withdraw from the Iraq squad because of an ankle injury.

Having had six players called up ahead of the break, which will span the end of September and the start of October, Wednesday could find themselves having to postpone their clash with Plymouth during the November international window.

As things currently stand, the clash with Argyle is sandwiched between Wednesday’s concluding EFL Trophy group game against Accrington Stanley at Hillsborough on Tuesday, November 10, and their trip to Oakwell to face South Yorkshire rivals Barnsley on Friday, November 20.

The weekend prior to the EFL Trophy clash with Accrington will see Wednesday get their FA Cup campaign underway, meaning the prospect of the clash with Plymouth being postponed could see them go almost three weeks without playing a League One match for a second time this season.

Wednesday are scheduled to face Blackpool the weekend before the FA Cup first round takes place, welcoming the Seasiders to Hillsborough on Sunday, November 1.

Plymouth, who are currently third in League One, one place and one point behind Wednesday, have not had either of their league fixtures postponed for this current break, meaning their clashes with Burton Albion and Leyton Orient are going ahead as originally planned.
