Sheffield Wednesday star Jamal Lowe wins Player of the Month award as manager misses out
Jamal Lowe scored three league goals for Sheffield Wednesday in August.
Sheffield Wednesday attacker Jamal Lowe has been crowned the winner of the League One Player of the Month award for August.
The Jamaican international played a key role in Wednesday winning two of their three League One matches during the opening month of the campaign, scoring three goals and registering one assist.
After scoring the winner from the penalty spot in the Owls’ 2-1 victory over Leyton Orient at the BetWright Stadium on the opening day of the season, Lowe, 32, scored twice in the 7-2 demolition of Bromley at Hillsborough a fortnight later.
Lowe also claimed an assist in the victory over Andy Woodman’s team, ending the first month of the campaign with four direct goal contributions in three league appearances. He also netted the winner in the Owls’ 1-0 win over Bolton Wanderers in the first round of the Carabao Cup.
Named on a four-man shortlist, Lowe, who also started September with a goal in the Owls’ 2-1 win over Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park, saw off competition from Huddersfield Town striker Joe Taylor, Bradford City defender Matt Pennington, and Blackpool goalkeeper and former Owls loanee Bailey Peacock-Farrell to win the award.
It is the first time a Wednesday player has been the recipient of a monthly EFL gong since Liam Palmer won the League One Player of the Month award in August 2022.
Lowe is the third Wednesday player to win the League One Player of the Month award for August, following in the footsteps of Giles Coke, who won the accolade in 2010, and Palmer. It is the first time that the former Swansea City man has won an individual EFL award during his career.

The attacker, who has started each of the Owls’ opening five league matches this season, has scored five goals and registered one assist in seven appearances in league and cup competitions so far this term. Only Jack Marriott and Taylor (both five) have scored more League One goals than Lowe (four) so far.
Lowe said of the award: “I’m really pleased. It's nice to get these types of things. But, we need to keep going. Personally, there's more for me to do, more goals to get, and for the team there's more wins for us to try and push up this league.”
Sky Sports’ EFL pundit Don Goodman, who is on the judging panel for the awards said: “Jamal Lowe has been the standout player in League One so far recording three goals and an assists across Wednesday’s opening three games.
“His versatility could be an important asset for Henrik Pedersen this season as he looks equally comfortable up front or coming in from the right.”
Meanwhile, Owls boss Henrik Pedersen missed out on the League One Manager of the Month award, being beaten to the prize by Huddersfield boss Martin Drury. The Terriers won seven points from their three league outings in August, winning two and drawing one, while Wednesday took six points after beating Orient and Bromley either side of their 1-0 home defeat to Bradford.
Pedersen had been nominated alongside Blackpool chief Ian Evatt, Stockport County boss Jim McNulty and Drury.
