Sean Fusire facing Sheffield Wednesday suspension risk vs Watford after abandoned Blackburn clash
Sheffield Wednesday’s Championship clash with Blackburn Rovers was abandoned on Saturday due to the weather.
Wing-back Sean Fusire will be walking a disciplinary tightrope when Sheffield Wednesday face Watford at Vicarage Road on Tuesday night after being yellow carded in Saturday’s abandoned clash with Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.
The Owls’ tussle with Valérien Ismaël’s side was halted with around 60 minutes on the clock after torrential rain left the players questioning the ability to continue. Referee Ruebyn Ricardo stopped the game for ten minutes and it was eventually decided that the pitch was unplayable, meaning the contest was abandoned.
Following Yuki Ohashi’s first half opener, Rovers were leading 1-0 at the time of the game being called off, meaning it marked the second time this season the home side had seen a fixture abandoned due to the weather when leading by a goal to nil.

Although an official decision is yet to be communicated, it is practically a guarantee the game will have to be replayed in its entirety, meaning Wednesday will have to visit Ewood Park again at a later date. It also means Ohashi’s goal will almost certainly be quashed.
One thing that will not be quashed, however, is the yellow card that Fusire was awarded in the first half, meaning he is now in danger of encountering a one-match suspension. His 16th-minute caution in Lancashire marked his fourth booking of the season.
Fusire walking disciplinary tightrope vs Watford
The trip to Blackburn was supposed to mark Wednesday’s 19th league outing of the season - the final game before cut-off point for players to avoid earning a one-match ban for earning four yellow cards. After avoiding a yellow card in last weekend’s 3-2 defeat to Preston North End, Fusire, alongside Liam Palmer and Barry Bannan, thought he had done enough to avoid earning a one-match ban before the cut-off.
However, as the game was abandoned, the Owls’ trip to Vicarage Road to face Watford in midweek will instead mark their 19th league game of the season, meaning Fusire must avoid picking up a yellow card in Hertfordshire to avoid a one-match ban.
If, for example, he is booked against Javi Gracia’s side, he will be suspended for Derby County’s visit to Hillsborough on December 15.
It is already unclear if Fusire will be available for the visit of the Rams, likewise Yan Valery, amid the possibility of Wednesday having to release him on that date for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
