Sheffield Wednesday youngsters hailed after playing key roles in FA Cup win out on loan

Two of Sheffield Wednesday’s youngsters made their mark out on loan in the FA Cup on Saturday afternoon.

Sheffield Wednesday youngsters Devlan Moses and Logan Stretch banked credit from Buxton boss Jordan Broadbent after they helped his side take another step towards the FA Cup first round on Saturday afternoon.

Moses, who joined the National League North outfit on loan until December 5 earlier this month, scored the only goal of the game to help Broadbent’s troops, who were reduced to ten men in the first half after Josh Shaw was sent off, beat Ashton United 1-0 at the Tarmac Silverlands Stadium and book their place in Monday’s draw for the third qualifying round.

Scoring the winner immediately after half-time, Moses fired home from distance to seal a third successive win for the Derbyshire outfit. It marked the 20-year-old’s second goal in as many games, meaning he has scored two goals in his first four appearances for the club.

Moses’ temporary switch to Buxton saw him reunited with former Wednesday youth coach Broadbent, meaning the Bucks chief knew what the Northern Ireland youth international would bring to the table.

Broadbent told Buxton’s in-house media: “We had a decision to make at half-time; we had to take one of the attacking players off just to give us a better foundation to probably sustain their attacks and play a little bit more in transition.

“The thought process was really simple: you don't take a goalscorer off the pitch. One thing Dev's proven over his short career and his youth team days when I've worked with him is that he's got loads of goals in him.

“I think his second half performance is definitely his best performance in a Buxton shirt so far.”

At the other end of the pitch, Buxton had on-loan Owls goalkeeper Stretch to thank for helping them preserve a clean sheet and securing their place in the next round. Stretch, who is scheduled to spend the duration of the season out on loan, has benefited from securing regular first-team football so far this season, and Broadbent has been delighted with his performances so far.

Broadbent added: “He's made a really good save from the free-kick, which from a crossing position has probably taken him a little bit by surprise, but he's got down really well and made a really, really good save.

“For such a young goalkeeper, he plays with such confidence, prowess and probably maturity beyond his years. I mentioned it in the press last week, the way he comes across, he dominates his box, dominates his area.

“There’s no team that’s going to billy him this season. He’s a really, really good addition.”
