Birmingham City boss plotting opportunity to end away day struggles vs Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday will be eyeing a first Championship home win of the season when Birmingham City visit Hillsborough.

Birmingham City manager Chris Davies has suggested his players must embrace the opportunity to end their winless run away from home when they face rock-bottom Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Tuesday night.

The Blues, who earned a point in the dying seconds when they faced Wednesday at St Andrew’s back in September, drawing 2-2, halted their four-game losing run away from home in the Championship on Saturday, drawing 1-1 with Swansea City.

Patrick Roberts earned the Blues a share of the spoils, netting a second half equaliser, after Swansea striker Žan Vipotnik opened the scoring in the first half with his 13th goal of the season.

The stalemate in south Wales secured Birmingham’s first point on the road since they drew 1-1 with Midlands rivals West Bromwich Albion on November 26. However, it did extend their winless run in the league on the road to seven games, last securing all three points on their travels against Preston North End at Deepdale in October.

Currently eight points shy of the play-off places, the Blues, who have won just nine points on the road this term, securing two wins, must improve away from home if they are to stand any chance of clinching a second successive promotion.

Davies looking to capitalise on Wednesday’s woes

Despite acknowledging the trip to Hillsborough offers his side an opportunity to secure just their third Championship away win of the season, Davies has admitted he is expecting “a very difficult match” against the Owls.

"It’s a performance to build on,” said Davies, as quoted by Birmingham Live. “As I said to the players, we have the opportunity to go a step further against Sheffield Wednesday.

"We should anticipate it being a very difficult match but we have a chance away from home to go and get that victory. We’ve got to go for it."

Wednesday are winless in the Championship at Hillsborough this season, meaning you have to go all the way back to Easter Monday for their last home triumph.

Failure to beat Birmingham will see the Owls set the outright Championship record for the longest winless run (21 games) ever recorded in the division since the English Football League was restructured back in 2004/05.
