The 26-year-old, a deadline day arrival from the Owls’ Championship rivals, signed a one-year contract extension at Pride Park, taking him to the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

And while he would not be drawn on his thinking around his long-term future, Marriott confirmed that in his mind at least, he will remain at Wednesday until the end of this season.

Admitting the opportunity came as something of a shock to him after playing six matches for the Rams this season, Marriott said: “My mind was made up and I thank Derby for allowing it.

“I appreciate they understand that as a player I wanted to be here, I wanted to be playing football. It’s all key for me.

“In my mind, I’m here until the end of the season. That’s the way I’m looking at it, that’s the best guarantee in my head, so whatever happens in January I’ll be trying not to think about it because I’m trying to be focused on playing well here.

“That’s all out of my control. I’m just going to work hard and do as well as I can for this football club.”

Owls boss Garry Monk has attempted to sign Marriott on previous occasions at other clubs and it was the pull of the manager, as well as the size of the club, that set Marriott on his way to choosing the Owls stint over other options.

He said: “When I heard about Wednesday I said to my agent, ‘Can we get it done? That’s where I want to be’.

“Having known about the manager’s interest at previous clubs I knew it was going to be right for me. I’ve seen the way we play, I feel like it suits me a lot better and I looked at the group and there’s a good, hard-working group of lads here.

“There was no doubt in my mind that this is where I wanted to be.”

Asked whether he believes he has a point to prove after his shock exit from Derby, Marriott said: “I think every player always has a point to prove. No matter who you are you always have your doubters out there, people who believe in you and then people with doubts.

“I just want to do well. I don’t feel as if I need to prove anyone anything other than to do it for myself and my family, because ultimately they’re the most important in the immediate, and of course the club and the manager.

“I don’t think I’ve got a point to prove to doubters. There was a difficulty last season with an ongoing injury that kept me out for the majority of the season, the majority of my appearances were from the bench. I was only able to get it fixed just after lockdown, but that’s fixed now.”
