The tricky Dutchman sat out of the Owls’ encouraging 3-3 draw with Birmingham on Saturday having made an encouraging start in his four Wednesday appearances.

And he revealed he believes the squad have the spirit required to fight their way out of their current malaise.

“It has been a bit difficult,” he said. “Somebody has to lose, but in training, every day we work hard. I see a lot of qualities and if we all stick together, we will turn things 100 per cent.

“Everybody is busy with changing and also staying all together. We are working on that every day and I see a lot of quality. The team is a really good team, but in a bad moment. In football, it can turn around quickly. We just need a win.

“You have to come with a good energy; a different energy. I try to do it in the games and I hope that everybody follows.

“It is not hoping [to win]. We just have to do it. With the remaining games, there is no time to lose another match, we just need to do it now; however it comes.”

Da Cruz signed amid interest from other clubs in England and reiterated that it was a dream to play in this country, admitting the more physical nature of the Championship is taking some getting used to.

He said: “I am happy to be here and enjoying English football and it is obviously a bit different. But I am enjoying it. It was always an ambition.

“It is a lot of fighting and for me, it is new. There are a lot of build-ups from behind. I am not used to that. But I have played three matches and am getting more comfortable.

“It is a bit of both sides. The ball goes faster up front, but to hold the ball is a bit more difficult.”
