Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Massimo Luongo ready to take on the boo-boys as he returns to former club QPR

Massimo Luongo admitted he is unsure of the reception he will get at QPR on Friday after the cancellation of his suspension for the straight red shown in the defeat against Blackburn Rovers freed him up for a Rangers return.

The Australian returns to the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium for the first time since his transfer to Sheffield Wednesday in the summer. His 145 outings at QPR puts him among the top 100 all-time appearance holders at the club for whom he won the Supporter’s Player of the Year award for the 2017/18 season.

But he appreciates that his image has changed a touch in the eyes of his former supporters and says he is ready to face whatever is thrown at him in the capital.

“It’s a nice draw, it will be nice to go back,” he smiled.

“I haven’t really thought about it, but I got a few texts saying ‘that’s a wicked draw for you’, but in my head I thought, ‘I wonder what reception I will get?’ But I’m excited for it.”

Asked what reception he expects from the QPR crowd, Luongo said: “Hopefully it will be a nice one.

“I think ex-players always get a good reception when they go back. Then the first time they get the ball, probably be a few boos.

“I think it’ll be alright, I’m really looking forward to it.”

The overturning of Luongo’s suspension – which would have also seen him miss the Championship matches with Wigan and Millwall – is a welcome boost for Garry Monk’s men, who look to bounce back from that humiliating 5-0 home defeat to Blackburn at the first attempt.

Speaking ahead of the QPR clash, Monk said that the right decision had been made.

He said: “Straight after the game we were very clear, it wasn’t a red card. Everyone, including their side, were in agreement.

“Thankfully the right decision was made.

“I don’t want to use it as an excuse - of course it doesn’t help, it changes the complex of what we can and can’t do - but no it didn’t change the outcome of the game.”
