Owls assistant coach Lee Bullen is tipping Barry Bannan to earn a Scotland recall.

But Bannan won the last of his 20 caps for Scotland in November 2014 when they lost to England 3-1 in a friendly.

Former Owls skipper Bullen said: “Barry will be knocking on the door again soon. I don’t want to be telling Gordon how to do his job but if he keeps putting in performances like the one against Arsenal I don’t think he’ll be far away from a recall.”

Bannan says he is focusing on his club form but told The Star: “I want to get called back into the (Scotland) squad but my main aim is to keep winning games here. We have a lot of good players and you can’t rest on your laurels.”

Bullen, meanwhile, has also praised Ross Wallace’s performances, claiming the experienced winger should have played on more occasions for his country.

He said: “Ross has been unlucky not to have played his part in the Scotland set-up. Don’t get me wrong, he’s had one or two injury problems but has been consistently operating at a high level for years and can deliver a ball from wide areas as well as anyone I’ve worked with.

“Give him half a yard and he’ll put it on a sixpence for someone. There are not many guys these days who have the whole package any more.

“Plenty can burn a defender off for pace but the thing that lets them down is their last touch, the most important thing – the delivery of the cross.

“But Ross has the ability to steal that half yard and the accuracy to do something dangerous with it. You saw that against Arsenal.

“He’s a key man for us in terms of the experience and creativity he brings to games and the character he shows in the dressing room.

“It’s a shame his chances of being involved in the
Scotland squad are probably past now because of his age.

“I can understand Gordon Strachan is looking for younger players and already has Shaun Maloney as an experienced player in who can fill that wide role.”
