Why upcoming Sheffield Wednesday match has been moved amid promotion scrap-out

Sheffield Wednesday’s upcoming Championship clash at Middlesbrough has been pushed back 24 hours.

The relegated Owls were due make the trip to Teesside on April 21 in what will be their final midweek match of a torrid campaign. News delivered by both clubs on Thursday morning confirmed that the match will take place on April 22 - with a 7:45pm kick-off.

The reason for the change in fixture - that comes just a month ahead of the clash and will no doubt have an impact on plans made by some travelling supporters - is nothing to do with Wednesday. It comes after their Middlesbrough hosts were rearranged for their promotion clash outing with Ipswich Town the weekend before, which now comes on the Sunday so it can be shown live on television.

The Owls take on Charlton Athletic at Hillsborough on the Saturday, meaning they will have a much-needed extra 24 hours to prepare for the clash.

In the last two years, EFL regulations have altered in order to allow more notice to supporters ahead of matches rearranged for television broadcast. Matches towards the end of campaigns carry less requirement for notice.

Per EFL website guidance: “Selections for matches scheduled after the first weekend in March will be announced on a four-week rolling basis starting from February 1 (e.g. a selection for the first weekend in April will be selected in the first weekend in March).”
