Sheffield Wednesday could be pondering a deal for Stephen McPhail once they are able to bring players in.
Boss Dave Jones has confirmed that the former Cardiff and Barnsley midfield player has been training with the club.
This in itself does not guarantee that they want to sign him but the 33-year-old was much admired by Jones when they worked together for five seasons in the Championship at Cardiff, who released him this summer after their promotion to the Premier League.
A creative midfield player is on the Owls manager’s wish list. McPhail is a free agent so it would be possible to sign him outside the transfer window; he is on record as saying that he is back to the levels he achieved three years ago.
But Jones will be considering options, and other senior players have come and gone from Middlewood after training with the Owls, for example ex-Blackpool striker Gary Taylor-Fletcher, who left for a trial at Millwall.
Wednesday will also be in the emergency loan market almost certainly for another centre half after Anthony Gardner’s injury, plus a striker, so long as they can offload players first.
