Sheffield Wednesday confirm Dave Challinor coaching staff - including future of Matt Hamshaw and others
Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed Dave Challinor is the club’s new manager.
Dave Challinor will bring two trusted coaches with him on the mission to continue the rebuild of Sheffield Wednesday, with further news locked in on the club’s existing backroom set-up.
The news was confirmed outright by the Owls on Tuesday morning after it had been announced the former Stockport County boss had agreed a deal to link up with his old Edgeley Park boss Simon Wilson at S6. The 51-year-old has signed a five-year deal and replaces Henrik Pedersen, who was sacked last weekend.
In a statement confirming the appointment, Wednesday chairman David Storch maintained the need for patience in these early stages of a long-term mission to bring the Owls to their potential. Sporting director Wilson said the immediate goal was in the new coaching set-up to go about ‘developing a recognisable playing identity, greater consistency and a team that competes with intensity, organisation and attacking intent.’
As previously reported by The Star, Challinor’s long-time assistant Clint Hill will join him at S6, with coach Anthony Sweeney having accompanied him to watch the weekend’s draw with Blackpool from the Hillsborough directors box. Both will join him in the dugout at S6.
Wednesday’s statement also appeared to confirm the futures of the club’s existing backroom team, which would include now former interim boss Matt Hamshaw, Giles Coke, Andy Holdsworth and goalkeeping coach Darryl Flahavan. Other members of the wider backroom team will also remain in situ.
A statement read in part: “He (Challinor) will be supported by First-Team Assistant Coaches Clint Hill and Antony Sweeney, who will work alongside the club's existing coaching and performance staff.
“Together, the new coaching appointments represent an important step in Wednesday's long-term football strategy, focused on establishing a recognisable playing identity and building a team capable of sustained growth and success.”
