The Government will make announcements on revisions made to a ‘Tier System’ that saw Sheffield placed in Tier 3, meaning no supporters were allowed to attend matches at either Hillsborough or Bramall Lane.

Should the region be placed under Tier 2 restrictions, up to 2,000 fans would be permitted entry. Wednesday played in front of 2,000 fans at Tier 2 Norwich earlier this month.

Wednesday fans have been unable to attend matches since the start of March. No matter the changes, away supporters will still not be allowed to travel to and from matches.

The Star understands that Wednesday have begun working with authorities on plans for the safe admission of supporters whenever that day comes, though a three-day turnaround between any potential lowering of restrictions tomorrow and the home match against Coventry on Saturday may well prove too tight.

As reported by The Star earlier this week, Sheffield Mayor Dan Jarvis admitted it is 'highly likely' that South Yorkshire will stay in Tier 3 - because of the lack of available hospital beds across the region and cases not falling quickly enough.

He said: “Over 600 people are currently in our region’s hospitals with Covid, with more being admitted every single week.

“It is imperative that we avoid a devastating third wave in January and put more lives put at risk – just at the point that a vaccine is being rolled out.

“It’s likely, therefore, that the Government will decide to keep South Yorkshire in Tier 3 next week.”
