Sheffield Wednesday make second signing of the summer with the addition of Chey Dunkley

The former Wigan Athletic man, who made over 100 league appearances for the Latics having fought his way up from non-league football, was available on a free transfer since leaving the club at the end of his contract. He was also reportedly of interest to Bristol City and recently relegated Watford.

Standing at six-foot-two, Dunkley is a physical defender capable with his feet. He brings with him a genuine goalscoring threat from set pieces, having bagged six goals last season and 32 in just over 300 games at senior level.

Dunkley joins teenage midfield starlet Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, a signing from Manchester City, at Hillsborough and is thrown into a crowded battle for the Owls’ three spots at centre-half.

Club captain Tom Lees, Dominic Iorfa, Julian Börner, Liam Palmer all played in those positions to good effect after Garry Monk’s switch to 3-5-2, while the returning Joost van Aken is set to be given a go in pre-season.

Dunkley will want to hit the ground running in pre-season having missed the latter stages of Wigan’s turbulent season with a broken leg.

Speaking about his goalscoring record in May, Dunkley said: “It’s been a good season for me. It’s been my second season in the Championship.

“Ultimately my aim is to keep clean sheets and keep the other team at bay, but where I can chip in, I should be chipping in.

“When I go up for corners, or free-kicks, I’m going up to score and be a third striker and this is something we’ve been working on closely with the coaches, manager.

“I’m happy that I have added to our goals tally and may that continue moving forward.”

Monk will want to add to his squad further in the coming weeks as the squad prepare to get back to work at Middlewood Road tomorrow. Dele-Bashiru and van Aken are expected to be there alongside their three new coaches; James Beattie, Darryl Flahavan and Andrew Hughes.
