'I'm over the moon to be back' - Manchester City midfielder's first words as he rejoins Sheffield Wednesday
The Owls have made their 17th summer signing...
Jaden Heskey has re-signed for Sheffield Wednesday on transfer deadline day.
The midfielder has rejoined on a season-long loan from Manchester City. The 20-year-old returns to Hillborough after making 20 appearances between January and May last term.
The Owls maintained an interest in Heskey all summer and now he completes his move before tonight’s 11pm deadline. Wednesday needed another central midfielder after Tyler Onyango suffered a potential season-ending injury on the opening day of the season.
Heskey said: “I'm over the moon to be back after I got a taste of it last season. It's definitely a place that I wanted to return to.
“It was really tough with the games and the situation that we were in, but I think the fans, the support that we had all the way through, it couldn't really go unnoticed. The last day was a special day that I'll always remember. I've already met the squad, and they're really top lads. It'll be easy just to fit in with the squad again.”
Owls sporting director, Simon Wilson, added: “Jaden was a target for the club from the day I arrived following a really productive loan spell last season, so we are delighted that, after considering a number of offers, he has chosen to return to Sheffield Wednesday.
“Henrik and the staff felt he was one of the players who developed most during that period and the additional analysis we have done only strengthened that view. He joins what we believe is a terrific group of players competing for selection in midfield and brings different attributes that complement what we already have.
“More than anything, when he arrived this morning, what struck me was how quickly he had the whole training ground smiling. He is a hardworking, positive person who is desperate to do well for Wednesday, and we are really pleased to have him back.”
Never say never, but Heskey’s signature is likely to be the only business Wednesday, who are working under tight financial restrictions, do on deadline day. However, clubs can still sign free agents in the coming weeks and months. It has been a busy first summer for Wednesday following administration and being taken over, with Heskey their 17th signing.
The Owls are back in action tonight away at Wycombe Wanderers and Heskey could be involved.
