Jacques Maghoma scored two goals either side of half-time as Sheffield Wednesday’s development squad defeated Coventry City 3-1 at Middlewood Road today.

The talented forward, who has not featured at first-team level since Owls’ goalless draw at Huddersfield Town, opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, firing a low left foot shot past Lee Burge.

Maghoma, a constant menace, fired a shot over the top after a mazy 50-yard run before grabbing his and Wednesday’s second just after the half hour mark. He exchanged a lovely one two with Paul Corry before side-footing a right foot shot past Burge.

Owls old boy Marcus Tudgay pulled one back for the visitors in the 69th minute, curling an unstoppable right foot effort out of Cameron Dawson’s reach.

But Emmanuel Dieseruvwe extinguished Coventry’s hopes of a comeback by grabbing a third. It was the striker’s fifth goal in his last four Under-21 outings.

Owls defender Will De Havilland tweeted: “Good to get a win against a former team Coventry. Enjoyed a good 90 minutes of smashing everyone.”

Owls: Dawson; Young, Dielna, De Havilland (Nicholson 87), Floro; Croasdale, Sanders (Meadows 65), Corry, Hanna; Dieseruvwe, Maghoma. Unused substitutes: Conneh, Smith
