Forward Jacques Maghoma has joined Sheffield Wednesday’s Championship rivals Birmingham City on a free transfer.

The Congolese international has today penned a two-year contract with the Blues, becoming their second summer signing.

Maghoma, released by the Owls last month, played under Birmingham boss Gary Rowett from 2009-2013 during his tenure in charge of Burton Albion.

“I’m really happy to be reunited back with my old manager who I was under for two years before he came into management and he coached me altogether for about four years,” said Maghoma.

“He was a big influence. At Burton, he kind of raised my game to another level which helped me get my move into the Championship.

“After leaving Sheffield Wednesday, it was almost perfect that I’ve been able to come back and work under him again at a big club like Birmingham and seeing how well they have done since he took over. I’ve got a really good feeling about next season.”

Maghoma was signed by ex-Owls boss Dave Jones two years ago after being named in the League Two PFA team of the year following his impressive goal-scoring exploits at Burton. Under Rowett’s tutelage, he scored 18 goals as the Brewers narrowly missed out on promotion.

After moving to Hillsborough, Maghoma went on to make 66 appearances, hitting four goals.

“He [Rowett] knows exactly what kind of player I am,” he told The Star. “I excite the fans. I like dribbling and it’s my main thing.

“With that he helped me to add goals into my game and played me in the right positions.

“Everything clicked together playing under him and hopefully that will happen again.”
