Sheffield Wednesday: Maghoma aims to regain Owls starting spot

Have your say

Jacques Maghoma has vowed to fight his way back into Sheffield Wednesday’s starting line-up.

The DR Congo international is pushing for a first-team recall after bagging a double in the Owls Under-21s’ 3-1 win over Coventry yesterday. Young striker Mani Dieseruvwe grabbed the other, taking his tally to five goals in his last four development matches.

Maghoma, an unused substitute in Wednesday’s last three Championship fixtures, told The Star: “It was nice to get two goals and get some minutes under my belt.

“It was a good exercise. I have not played for three weeks so I just wanted to keep my fitness up.

“It was good to get some goals for my confidence and hopefully I will be involved at Fulham on Saturday.

“The gaffer knows what I can do. I came out of the team and the team, of late, have been winning so it is always hard to put me back in when they are doing well.”

Coach Lee Bullen described Maghoma’s display as “fantastic”. The 27-year-old has featured 20 times for the Owls during the 2014/15 campaign, hitting one goal.

“It is frustrating when you are not playing,” he admitted. “But players have been doing well in my position. Chris Maguire and Royston Drenthe have got some assists and created a lot of chances.

“It is hard for a manager to change a team when players are in form and the team is getting results. I want the team to carry on doing well but hopefully I can get back into the side and show what I can do.”

Claude Dielna also played the full match, with Owls old boy Marcus Tudgay claiming Coventry’s consolation.
