Owls striker Gary Madine has joined League One side Coventry City on a month’s loan.

The Gateshead-born player has struggled to command a regular first-team spot at Hillsborough, making just one Championship start this season.

The 24-year-old, contracted to Wednesday until the end of the season, has scored once in 13 outings.

With Wednesday head coach Stuart Gray having recruited Gary Taylor-Fletcher on loan from Leicester City, Madine has slipped down in the pecking order for a striking berth.

Madine, who began his career at Carlisle United, joined the Sky Blues on loan in October 2009, making nine appearances in a three-month loan spell at the Ricoh Arena.

Coventry boss Stephen Pressley said: “We’re delighted to bring in a player of Gary’s quality. He is a player we’ve been tracking for sometime and we’ve always been aware of the quality he has.

“We made enquiries about availability in the summer but remained very much in Sheffield Wednesday’s plans at the time.

“He is a player with a proven goal-scoring record at this level and certainly brings great presence and physicality to the team.”

Madine will wear shirt number eight at Coventry and could make his debut against Leyton Orient this weekend.
