Sheffield Wednesday’s 2021/22 League One campaign officially gets underway this evening!

It’s a late kick off, so while most of the country is watching their teams return to action at 3pm, Wednesdayites will have to wait that little bit longer…

But after the last few weeks, it’s pretty safe to say that they’re happy to wait. Darren Moore has brought 12 new signings in, some young, some older, but all pretty exciting. And fans are starting to let those optimism levels creep back up again.

If the end of 2020/21 felt a bit inevitable after the points deduction, 2021/22 feels like a new beginning. A fresh start. And Moore is at the forefront of all of it.

Alex Miller and Joe Crann will be there at the Valley today as the Owls take on Charlton Athletic, so make sure you stay tuned right here on our blog to get all the gossip as and when it happens.

Up the Owls.

Sheffield Wednesday LIVE: Debuts aplenty expected as Owls take on Charlton Athletic

Key Events

  • Paterson had to go off with a head injury
  • Mide Shodipo and Josh Windass were missing
  • Kamberi makes his debut off the bench

Kamberi warming up...

He may be called upon here. The stretcher is out.

Paterson down. And the the physios are called straight over.

He’s down on the floor, and it doesn’t look great. Stockley immediately told the ref to stop play when it happened. He’s receiving attention now.

Some good work from Jaiyesimi, but Bannan manages to pinch it.

He also clears it after nothing comes from the corner, booting the ball up the pitch to get rid of any danger.

Some real noise here at the Valley... The Wednesday fans have been singing since the start, but up in the media box you can only here the Charlton fans. They haven’t stopped for ages now.

Electric atmosphere, and the game’s got a bit of zip to it too.

And we’re underway!

Here’s to a happier 2021/22...

It’s tough to really talk too much about this game, because of how early in the season it is, but you’d think this is going to be a tight one.

Both teams will be eager to try and make a push this season, and have the players to do so.

Former Owl, Sean Clare, is in the XI for Charlton, and Jay Stockley is donning the captain’s armband.

Have to think that this game could be won or lost in the heart of midfield, and Wednesday do have plenty of quality there with Bannan/Wing/Adeniran.

The major worry still, however, is goals. With Gregory not making the cut, it’s up to Paterson to lead the line. He got a few last season, and he’ll be hoping to improve on that again following the drop in divisions.

So Wednesday are going for a 4-3-3 once again, with Palmer LB and Hunt RB.

Brown, who was brought in as a LB, is playing on the left wing once again after his impressive substitute against Huddersfield. The midfield remains the same with Bannan, Wing and Adeniran looking to boss things in the centre of the park.

Four new signings on the bench, with Kamberi, Byers, Johnson and Corbeanu making the squad. No Lee Gregory.

..and the oppo.. Recognise anyone..
