Former Owls goalkeeper hangs up his gloves

Ex-Wednesday stopper Stephen Bywater has announced his retirement from football.

The 39-year-old joined the Owls permanently in 2012 after a successful loan stint from Derby County.

After completing his move to Hillsborough, he said: “It's a no-brainer for me. I was always going to sign as soon as I knew of the offer. This is the biggest club outside of the Premiership, and that is a fact.”

He was Wednesday’s first choice goalkeeper as they secured automatic promotion from League One ahead of the Blades.

Bywater hangs up his gloves after being at League One Burton Albion since 2016.
