Exclusive:Sheffield Wednesday hit with season-ending injury to Liam Cooper with 13 games to go
Sheffield Wednesday defender, Liam Cooper, may well have played his last game for the Owls after sustaining a serious injury on Sunday.
Cooper joined the club back in November as he jumped aboard the Wednesday ship to join the fight against what felt like – and ultimately became – a battle against inevitable relegation into League One.
Defeat to Sheffield United over the weekend confirmed it, and left Henrik Pedersen and his side with nothing but pride left to play for in their remaining 13 Championship fixtures. The only aim now is to try and climb out of minus points.
Liam Cooper is set to miss the rest of Sheffield Wednesday’s season
If they’re to do that, though, it’ll be without the services of experienced centre back, Cooper, who has picked up a groin injury that The Star understands is set to sideline him for the remainder of the 2025/26 campaign. With his contract expiring at the end of June, it could be that ‘Coops’ doesn’t don a Wednesday shirt again.
Aside from the obvious gap that the defender will leave in the Wednesday defence, his injury leaves Pedersen with another quandary given that Gabriel Otegbayo is suspended for the trip to Norwich City this week.
The Owls will be without Cooper and Otegbayo, as well as Di’Shon Bernard, Dom Iorfa, Max Lowe, Gui Siqueira and Ernie Weaver, with Liam Palmer likely to be the only senior defender available at Carrow Road. Tayo Adaramola is also a doubt after limping off against the Blades.
All of the above could see the likes of Cole McGhee, Joe Emery and Reece Johnson be called upon in Norwich, while there are also question marks over whether Marvelous Nakamba could return after his head injury ahead of the game at Bramall Lane.
