Exclusive:Why former fan favourite Lee Gregory is back at Sheffield Wednesday
There’s a former striker, a former number nine, back at Sheffield Wednesday… And he goes by the name of Gregory.
Wednesday’s U21s beat Hull City on Tuesday afternoon as they faced off in the Professional Development League, and there was a familiar face on the touchline – that of ex-Owl, Lee Gregory.
The 37-year-old, who decided to retire last year, is believed to be working on getting into the coaching game now, and as a Sheffield local – who played over 100 times for the men in blue and white – his first stop was Hillsborough.

It’s understood that ‘Greggers’ has been welcomed into Middlewood Road by manager, Henrik Pedersen, as he looks to learn the trade, and he’s also been picking things up from the sidelines as part of the youth setup.
Though there’s nothing formal on the table at this point, Gregory would no doubt jump at the chance to be part of the setup once more, with the former striker having spoken previously about how he didn’t want to leave the club in 2024, only doing so because of the circumstances around his lack of minutes under Danny Röhl.
Now, having taken some time out after hanging up his boots in September, it looks like the ex-Millwall and Stoke City man is ready to lace them up once again – only with quite a bit less ballwork involved.
How long Gregory will be around at S6 remains to be seen at this point, but he’s believed to have been received with open arms by the staff at the club, and having somebody of his finishing prowess around the place certainly won’t go amiss.
