The experienced keeper collided with Baggies playmaker Matheus Pereira in the 88th minute after Liam Palmer hesitated in clearing a West Brom ball over the top, believing Charlie Austin to be offside.

Austin stroked the ball home from the spot to hand the league leaders a 2-1 win, leaving the Owls frustrated at dropping vital Championship points for the third game running.

Westwood gave Palmer a ferocious dressing down in the moments after the mix-up. Visibly frustrated, the full-back was sent off in the final moments and at the final whistle Westwood chose to storm straight down the Hawthorns tunnel, seemingly ignoring captain Barry Bannan’s instruction to acknowledge the visiting supporters.

But the Republic of Ireland international ‘held his hands up’ to his teammates in the changing room after the match, according to Owls front man Steven Fletcher.

“He's disappointed, he put his hands up,” Fletcher said, backing the keeper to bounce back on Wednesday evening against Birmingham.

“He's an experienced man, it's probably not the first time he's had to put his hands up and it might not be the last. He'll take it hard but he has to put it to the back of his mind as well because there's another big game.

“He's a big lad and an experienced man like I said. He knows his job and his role, obviously there was a lapse in concentration but that happens in football.”

Earlier in the match Fletcher had scored a penalty of his own to level the scores and provided a typically committed performance.

The goal ended a run of six matches without a goal for the Scot, who claimed the barren spell hadn’t concerned him.

He said: “You'll probably know better than me how many games I'd gone.

“I don't really look at it that way but it's nice to get another goal and add to the tally. It's always nice to get a goal, but the win is the most important thing, not the goals for me.”
