The former Rotherham United man will certainly miss out on the weekend’s visit of Charlton Athletic.

Wednesday’s resources up top have looked stretched in recent outings, with Lee Gregory suspended at MK Dons before hobbling off in the midweek Carabao Cup win over Sunderland.

Moore is on the lookout for potential additions in that area and while he is confident Gregory will be OK for Charlton, Smith’s return will have to wait.

“I don't want to jump the gun,” Moore said on the 30-year-old.

“It is a niggly injury. We have got to make sure he's right.

“He has initially got to get over the early part of the injury. Once he gets back, he will come straight back in because it is only a niggly injury. It will be rapid to get him back quickly.

“I have not really put a date yet on it but I will keep checking with the medical team on his progress. We will get him through this weekend and have a look.”

Added concerns over the fitness of Reece James and Ben Heneghan after they were taken off early in the Sunderland win were allayed.

James was substituted late on with cramp while Heneghan’s half-time switch with Michael Ihiekwe was pre-planned, Moore confirmed. Josh Windass was absent from the matchday squad but there are no concerns as he was rested.
