Owls boss Stuart Gray is wary of Reading’s front two ahead of their Championship tussle at Hillsborough tomorrow.

The Wednesday chief has previously tried to sign Royals duo Glenn Murray and Simon Cox. He inquired about Murray’s services last season but was thwarted in his attempts to bring in the big target man.

Cox was on the brink of joining the Owls on a permanent basis last month as part of the deal which saw Michail Antonio head to Nottingham Forest. Ultimately, he decided to return to Reading.

Gray said: “We tried to get him [Cox] in the deal which took Antonio to Forest, but it wasn’t to be as he wanted to be further south towards where his family was.

“But Simon is a goalscorer and it’s a shame he’s not at Sheffield Wednesday. We missed out on Simon but got Stevie May instead. It would have been nice to have got both in the building.”

“You have to keep Simon quiet and out of the box because that’s where he comes alive; his reading of situations is good,” said Gray.

“I remember he scored for Forest against us last year, so I will be reminding my back four to try and keep him quiet.

“They have Murray, from Crystal Palace, who we tried to get in but he went to Reading. Palace didn’t want to let him out last season when we put the call in.”
