Stuart Gray - set to be officialy confirmed as Owls boss today - has raised hopes that the club will be able to keep Connor Wickham.

Gray has revealed that Wickham is “very keen” to extend his loan from Sunderland for a second time.

The team boss will also press ahead with attempts to sign another two loan strikers whether or not Wickham stays.

“We want to get Connor sorted,” said Gray. “Hopefully it can be sorted out pretty soon. I’ve had conversations with Gus Poyet, and I think Gus wants to speak to Connor as well.

“Connor is very keen and wants to stay, so fingers crossed that a deal can be thrashed out with Sunderland.”

Wickham cannot play in tomorrow’s FA Cup tie at Rochdale. His current loan ends after the League match at Millwall on Tuesday, and the Owls hope that another club do not succeed in taking him away from Sunderland before the January transfer window shuts next Friday.

Gray said he has thoroughly enjoyed his role as caretaker manager but will be pleased and relieved when the formalities of his appointment have been completed.
