Stuart Gray would love to work again with Connor Wickham one day.

The striker has been recalled by Sunderland from his loan at Leeds.

If he still does not become a first-team regular with the Black Cats - as was the case when the Owls signed him - then Gray could well explore the possibility of bringing him back to Hillsborough in the summer.

“Leeds will be disappointed at Connor getting called back,” says Gray. “But he’s had minutes of football rather than just training.

“It’s probably not worked out for him at Leeds as he would have liked. Your problem when you have players on loan is that they can be called back. He did an excellent job for us. I was gutted and disappointed, and so was he, that we couldn’t get him back here.

“Sometimes players just fit into the right system and the right club. He got eight goals in 11 games for us, which was a fantastic return.

“You never know, hopefully we can work together again.”

Wickham did not score in his five games for Leeds. Signed last month, he was supposed to remain with them for the remainder of the season but is wanted by Sunderland because of their problems up front. He will be in the squad to face Liverpool at Anfield tonight. Leeds manager Brian McDermott said: “We’re disappointed to lose Connor, but I’d like to thank Gus (Poyet) for allowing him to come here.

“He has done extremely well for us, and we wish him well for the future.”
