The 23-year-old battled back from a knee injury – that initially threatened to keep him out until after Christmas – to make two appearances for the under-23s last week.

And Wildsmith, who has previously gained experience on loan at Barnsley and Alfreton Town, said that while he is happy at Hillsborough, he hopes to hold talks with Owls boss Garry Monk in the coming weeks to discuss his immediate future at the club.

His injury, suffered in pre-season, allowed Cameron Dawson a clear run into the Owls starting line-up following Keiren Westwood’s fall from favour.

And asked whether he’d be open to a move away in January, Wildsmith admitted he was keen to get more first team pitch time under his belt.

Speaking to The Star, he said: “I have to have a word with the gaffer first and see what his thoughts on the situation are.

“If someone offered me games, I’m not saying I wouldn’t turn it down but I’m not saying I’d go for it. I don’t know what the situation is with the gaffer.

“We’ll make a decision on that and what we want to do.

“If the loan move was there I’d obviously see it and have a chat about it.

“I’ve played a couple of games for the under-23s and I want to get a feeler about what the plan is for me.

“If that’s going out on loan, it’s going out on loan. If it’s staying here, it’s staying here. I’ll honour the gaffer’s decision on that.”

Wildsmith has made 48 first team appearances for Wednesday, the last of which came in an EFL Cup defeat to Wolves in August 2018.

“I just want to play,” he said. “It’s been a while since my last game.

“I’m happy to play whenever, to get back involved and a few games come then obviously I’ll snap your hand off.

“It’s going to be hard work, I’m going to have to put the hours in at training and get myself in front of the gaffer.”
