It doubled-up as an important milestone as Dawson made his 50th appearance for the first team, having made his debut in a home clash with Brighton back in October 2016.

The 24-year-old, who last month nipped in ahead of long-time number one Keiren Westwood in the selection stakes, has played the last five games between the Owls’ sticks.

And he made a couple of vital saves in the first half to keep that clean sheet intact while his teammates, led by hat-trick hero Jordan Rhodes, did the damage at the other end.

His current deal expires in the summer but amid interest from the likes of Rangers and Derby County, the lifelong Wednesdayite reassured supporters that he was looking forward to entering contract negotiations with the club in the coming weeks.

Speaking earlier this month he said: “If I'm wanted here then that's the main thing for me.

“I’ve had some really open, positive talks with the manager.

“In terms of contract talks, that’s not started yet.

“I'm at a great football club, of course I’m open to contract talks.

“Like I say, that hasn’t started yet, but as and when that does happen, happy days.”

Highlights in Dawson’s career to date include an iconic penalty save in the Sheffield derby in November 2018.
