The possible return of Sheffield Wednesday top scorer Steven Fletcher was the surprise fitness update offered by Owls boss Garry Monk ahead of their trip to Birmingham City, with left-back Morgan Fox also in contention for a recall.

Wales youth international Fox, the club’s player of the month for January, has been on the sidelines since hobbling out of their defeat at Wigan last month with an ankle knock.

And Monk has repeatedly described how much the side have missed Fox’s presence at the back, admitting they have lacked balance in his absence.

The defender has been back in full training but the Owls boss admitted a decision would be made on his match fitness on Friday.

Monk said: “Foxy has been back out on the grass this week, so we'll assess him. We've got another day's training so we'll take a good look at him, but he's been back out on the pitches training. Hopefully that can happen.”

There isn’t quite as good news for midfielders Massimo Luongo (calf) or Adam Reach (toe), with full-back Moses Odubajo (groin) also ruled out after his reintegration into Monk’s plans earlier this year.

“Massimo still isn't quite over it,” Monk said. “He got a secondary injury on his calf so he's still not quite over that. He hasn’t been out on the pitches this week.

“Reachy and Mo are still not ready for this week, but hopefully will be there sooner rather than later. They're not available for this week.”
