Further scan confirmed on Sheffield Wednesday youngster Olaf Kobacki - George Brown injury latest

Squad numbers at Sheffield Wednesday are threatening to swell further, with more players expected to return before Christmas after the successful rehabilitation of Nathaniel Chalobah and Pierce Charles.

Charles was a star of the show in the Owls’ midweek draw at Watford, making seven saves in a man of the match effort that saw his side so cruelly pegged back in the final seconds of a hard-fought evening. Experienced midfielder Chalobah came off the bench with 15 minutes to go for his first run-out since the opening day of the campaign.

It is hoped Wednesday can find a way to avoid further injury chaos after a glut of absences arrived in the opening weeks of the season. The managing of a threadbare squad through a typically difficult Championship fixture schedule has been a huge task and has seen workloads carefully managed behind the scenes.

Beyond Charles and Chalobah, the hope is that further numbers can return. Young forward George Brown burst onto the scene with a vital goal in his full league debut at Portsmouth in September but has not featured for two months after twisting his foot in training back in October. The hope is that he can be eased back into contention before Christmas.

“He is on the pitch and he is training,” Owls boss Henrik Pedersen told The Star. “I hope this week he will be back in full power training and I hope we can see him soon back in the squad again. I am really looking forward to this.”

Polish attacker Olaf Kobacki is another medium-term absentee edging his way back. The 24-year-old hasn’t featured since a September cup run-out against Grimsby Town and was due a scan this week to determine the success of his recovery so far. It’s understood that the scan took place on Tuesday and should all be well, his Yuletide target date should remain.

On Kobacki, Pedersen said: “He has a scan again this week and then we are waiting for him to get the go-ahead to go with the physical coaches. Then he can start to work with more load, but I think still it will be Christmas time until we see him again.”
