Sheffield Wednesday striker Chris Maguire has set his sights on forcing his way back into Dave Jones’ first-team plans following his midweek run-out.
The forward featured in Wednesday’s under-21s victory over Barnsley on Tuesday, having recently shrugged off a toe injury. Maguire played nearly 70 minutes at Hillsborough and was the architect of Franck Betra’s opener.
Maguire said he was “disappointed” not to be included in the match-day squad in last Saturday’s draw at home to Ipswich Town. He has not featured in Wednesday’s last three fixtures and made just four appearances this term.
“I was fit for Saturday but I wasn’t picked for selection and it’s tough when you’re not getting game time,” admitted Maguire.
Of his performance versus Barnsley, he said: “I was a bit disappointed not to get a full 90 minutes under my belt because I’ve not played much but I did 70 minutes or so and it keeps me going.”
Maguire is confident, if given the opportunity to stake his claim, he can flourish in whatever formation Wednesday choose to play in their crucial away double-header with Bolton Wanderers and Barnsley following the two-week international break.
“I’m comfortable on the ball,” said the Scottish player. “People who have seen me know that I’m not afraid to make things happen.”
