Where things sit on the Sheffield Wednesday free agent hunt with one spotted at Middlewood Road
Sheffield Wednesday have one slot open for a free agent addition as they look to bring a new face into their squad - but it’s not proving the easiest space to navigate, The Star understands.
Owls boss Henrik Pedersen spoke over the weekend to confirm a meeting would be held early this week to determine the club’s latest situation with a number of injury cases - the outcome of which was set to inform which direction they wished to take with the remaining free agent spot.
The Star understands that the feeling is the free agent market isn’t bustling with standout options and that particular focus is being placed on any options being able to come in and impact things over a period of time. Former England international Nathan Redmond joined the club on a short-term deal over midwinter but was released at the end of his contract last month after he failed to overcome fitness struggles to become a regular feature.
Though the market is slim, there are options out there and it’s understood that former Chelsea and Bournemouth youngster Zain Silcott-Duberry is still around the place having joined up to train with Wednesday ahead of the February 1 transfer deadline. Silcott-Duberry was last contracted to Greek giants Olympiakos and while the details of his contract status are not crystal clear, The Star is of the understanding he is a potential option.

Other names in the free agent market are also being considered, it’s understood, and there seems to be no panicked rush to fill the remaining squad slot, which was effectively opened up by the departure of Yan Valery on loan to Swiss side Young Boys after the UK deadline had passed. Personality is believed to be a major consideration as well as fitness and playing profile and it remains to be seen whether further free agents will be welcomed to Middlewood Road as the Owls take a closer look.
Recruitment restrictions remain and it’s understood Wednesday will not have the ability to shell out the full weight of Valery’s wages on a new player - though there will be a level cash to work with should they land on the right option. All signings are ultimately subject to EFL approval, based on each move’s financial viability as the club continues to navigate administration. Discussions with the EFL are near-constant and all parties are believed to be aware of what is possible.
