They hardly created a meaningful chance during a lacklustre 90 minutes at St Andrew’s which saw the Owls’ mini-revival in the Championship come to a shuddering halt on a wet and miserable night in the West Midlands.

Make no mistake about it, Wednesday could have no complaints about how last night’s game unfolded

But eagle-eyed observers among the Wednesday faithful couldn’t help but notice the condition of the St Andrew’s playing surface and quickly seized on remarks made about the Hillsborough pitch by Sky Blues boss Mark Robins after his side were beaten by the Owls just six weeks ago.

He described the playing surface at S6 as ‘horrific’ and revealed how his side found it ‘very difficult to get any control’ because of it.

“Was it Mark Robins that was complaining about the pitch at Hillsborough?’ asked Wednesdayite Craig Busby on Twitter.

And Mick Renshaw tweeted: “Wonder if Mark Robins will complain about pitch tonight?. It’s like a Sunday league pitch.”

Now, of course, weeks of bad weather, the workload being placed on them as well as the lack of preparation for ground staff had during a shortened close-season have led to pitches across the country looking a bit worse for wear.

Add in the fact that St Andrew’s also hosts games for the Sky Blues and Birmingham City and you can see why it didn’t look in the best condition.

But having bemoaned the condition of the pitch at Hillsborough, sadly, for Wednesday, the former Manchester United striker’s side didn’t appear to have too many issues dealing with a pitch which looked no better than the one they were confronted with in South Yorkshire not so long ago.
