There’s one player at the Sheffield Wednesday party that I don’t feel we’ve got to know very well yet.
Claude Dielna is on the periphery of the gathering making excellent small talk with the other players but not quite elevated himself to the life and soul of the party.
Yet, if rumours are to be believed, he maybe making his excuses and moving onto West Brom.
The Frenchman has made 12 appearances this season but nine of them from the bench.
As a left-footed defender he’s found it hard to gain a regular place in the team with Loovens, Helan and Mattock playing solidly this season.
It’s nice to have competition for the left-back position.
As much as I loved Reda Johnson his clumsy defending did cost us points. It’s a good job he balanced it out with goals.
Dielna’s versatility as a central defender, left-back and occasionally as a midfielder, he’s a very useful man to have in the squad.
Whether his substitute role is enough to sustain him as a player is unknown. He told The Star this week that he is “happy” with the Owls and wants to stay.
I really hope he does stay at Hillsborough. When he has played he’s looked confident on the ball and not shy about moving forward.
Stuart Gray is obviously a fan of his. When Dielna first joined the Owls he did an interview with getfootballnewsfrance.com and said “He (Gray) came to see me regularly when I was playing for Ajaccio in Ligue 1. He wanted me already then, even before the season was over.”
Let’s hope we get to see more of what Stuart saw in him and that he doesn’t leave the play-off push party early.
