Sheffield Wednesday face anxious wait over Kieran Lee

Lee, along with team-mate Gary Hooper, made his return to action in the Owls' Under-23s 2-1 victory over Colchester United at Hillsborough yesterday.

But the 29-year-old, who was playing for the first time since December due to a hip problem, was subbed off after quarter of an hour and replaced by Ciaran Brennan.

Hooper played 45 minutes as he stepped up his recovery from injury while Joe Wildsmith and Morgan Fox also featured in a strong side.

Development squad manager Neil Thompson told The Star: "The senior players did terrific. Kieran Lee unfortunately went off. 

"Hoops was really good for 45 and Foxy got a good 90 minutes under his locker so that helps the younger kids when they are playing. 

"It gives them someone to look up to and I thought one or two had some really good performances."

Asked specifically on Lee's withdrawal, Thompson said: "The first-team staff will have a look at him as we go forward. 

"He is a quality player and one or two of these first-team lads need football. Hoops is coming back and obviously Foxy needs some football. It was a good high intensity game for them."

When quizzed on whether Lee went off due to an injury, Thompson replied: "I have not spoken to the medical staff on that. Kieran has obviously had one or two issues but that's not for me to say. He got some minutes in so we will obviously see how he is tomorrow."

Meanwhile, Andy Holdsworth has been appointed the Owls' new Under-18s boss. The 34-year-old replaces Ben Wilkinson, who left over the summer. Holdsworth spent the bulk of his playing career at Huddersfield Town, making over 200 appearances for the Terriers.

He headed into coaching with Barnsley's academy, working with the Reds' younger age groups.

'It is something I have always wanted to do, work with the older age groups and within that Professional Development stage, where I can hopefully help produce players for the first team.

'I am very thankful to Steven Haslam, Daral Pugh and other members of the team and the club for giving me this opportunity.'
