The Midlands side could feature lifelong Wednesday fan and former youth player Jamie Vardy as well as former Owls starlet George Hirst. The clash will mark as a step up in the Hillsborough side’s preparations for the 2020/21 season, which will pack up and head to Loughborough for a five-day camp from Monday.

The match will be played on Saturday August 29 at midday. It will be behind closed doors with no access for supporters or media.

Wednesday have been back at Middlewood Road this week for testing and conditioning following their short three-week break. It has offered them an opportunity to get down to business with their new coaching team, including James Beattie, Andrew Hughes and Darryl Flahavan, and it is understood that they have been training in small groups.

The bulk of the outfit’s technical and ball work will be carried out from next week. The Star understands that the club have also been in talks to stage a further friendly before the season opener – a Carabao Cup fixture at Walsall – on September 5.

The club will head back to Sheffield following the match and as it stands there are no plans to host a pre-season game at Hillsborough.

Wednesday fans will hope for a first run out with their new teammates for new signings Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Chey Dunkley and loanee Izzy Brown.

They could also be joined by Josh Windass, who as The Star revealed earlier today is considering a move to Wednesday and two other clubs including Preston after a bid was accepted by Wigan Athletic this week.

Vardy, who won the Premier League golden boot last season, has lined up against Wednesday on two previous occasions but is yet to score against them, winning once and losing once.
