One omission and two things revealed as Sheffield Wednesday submit EFL squad list
Sheffield Wednesday’s squad registration to the EFL has been published.
Sheffield Wednesday’s EFL squad list has been confirmed by the authority after its deadline for submission on Wednesday last week.
The Owls have included 17 names to their ‘in squad’ list, with a further 25 satisfying the criteria for inclusion in the ‘under 21’ list, which this year includes loanees. League One clubs are permitted to register up to 22 senior players in total and names can be added to the list during the season - though players cannot be taken off the list until January unless accepted with special dispensation.
EFL handbook ruling 44.9 advises the regulations on squad lists and makes clear that unlike in Championship football, League One clubs are not duty bound to register goalkeepers, meaning Wednesday’s quartet of stoppers are not included in the list.
The only notable omission from Wednesday’s list seems to be that of new boy Tyler Onyango, who suffered a serious knee injury on debut for the Owls at Leyton Orient last month and has been ruled likely to miss the remainder of the campaign. Di’Shon Bernard has been included having been omitted from previous lists owing to his recovery from long-term injury.
AFC Wimbledon (15) and Leicester City (15) are the only third tier clubs to have registered a squad list with fewer players than Wednesday’s 17, though there is added context in that a number of the Owls’ frontline players feature in their under-21 list.
The number would in theory allow Wednesday to add up to five further outfield players over the age of 25 to their ‘In Squad’ list through the free agent market, though that prospect has been played down by manager Henrik Pedersen and sporting director Simon Wilson in recent media engagements.
The list also confirms that the Owls have not used up any of their Elite Significant Contribution (ESC) player registration slots - of which a League One club can have two. ESC slots allow EFL clubs to sign international players who do not meet the standard Governing Body Endorsement (GBE) points threshold for a normal work permit - Jordi Liongola’s status was previously unconfirmed.
