Sheffield Wednesday January decisions will come around quick as EFL 'dialogue' continues

Sheffield Wednesday entered a next stage of its rebuild this week with the hiring of a new management team.

Time will be taken for new Sheffield Wednesday boss Dave Challinor to fully assess his squad before focus begins to shift to changes that can be made during winter transfer window.

The Owls are understood to be close to the limit of the spending caps that were placed on the club as part of their business plan agreement with the EFL following the terms of the club’s changing of hands and exit from administration. This left the latter stages of the summer transfer a mission in fine-tuning the squad with loan additions.

Among those additions was the late, late loan signing of Davis Keillor-Dunn from Wrexham. The terms of that agreement mean he is currently signed to Wednesday until late January only due to the funds available in the business plan, though it was suggested that things could be realigned to ensure he was able to play out a full season at S6 - as is expected. In theory, player sales could stand to increase wage budgets and loan agreements could be terminated to facilitate a tweaking of the squad.

The Owls currently have six loanees on their books and can name only five in a matchday squad. Some of those loans are proving more successful than others and though the individual terms of each deal are not known, standard agreements between clubs would allow either parent club or loaning club the right to terminate a deal.

Confirmation of Challinor’s appointment came on Monday and in these embryonic days of his steering of the club, any immediate focus is clearly squarely on the here and now. Discussions are ongoing with the EFL, however, to outline what can be done in preparation for the window.

Sporting director Simon Wilson said on their restrictions heading into January: “We’re not 100 per cent sure exactly what it is. We’re constantly in dialogue with the league around the rules and the limitations. We obviously have the ability to change the squad, as anyone does. The window is open and business can be done.

“At this moment in time, Dave has just come into the building, he needs a bit of time to assess the squad and get a feel for which players are going to be the most useful and where we have areas of need. Then we’ll work into the window from that point.”
