Sheffield Wednesday Digest: More on Owls' new kit deal with Macron; "Wonderful" new coach appointed

In a surprise announcement on Friday, the Owls confirmed that they had formed a ‘long-term’ partnership with the Italian sportswear brand, and said to watch out for future news on the kit launch itself.

The club explained in their statement there would be a pre-season training kit, travel kit and matchday kit for the upcoming trip to Wales, with Macron supplying a temporary kit for the friendly against Celtic on July 7th and also their ‘opening pre-season friendly fixtures’.

With that in mind, that Macron gear will not go on sale to supporters, but Wednesday did say that it ‘will be auctioned off at a later date to raise money for charities supported by SWFC and Macron’. READ FULL STORY HERE

New coach ‘a wonderful human being’

Darren Moore says that new Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper, Adriano Basso’ is a ‘wonderful human being’ and called him a ‘really positive addition’.

Basso is the latest appointment to Moore’s technical team at Wednesday, joining assistant manager Jamie Smith, Paul Williams and the long-serving Neil Thompson, and comes on board to try and take Joe Wildsmith, Cameron Dawson and the club’s other young goalkeepers to the next level.

Moore, who saw his side return to for preseason testing on Friday, will be hoping to hit the ground running against Charlton Athletic on August 7 when League One gets underway – and Basso’s appointment is seen as another step in the right direction for the Owls. READ FULL STORY HERE

The new Owls goalkeeper coach said: “I’m very delighted and very happy to have the opportunity to come here… It’s a great club, with great staff and great people and I’m very happy.

“To come to such a big club is important and so is the challenge and the opportunity to succeed. The club has a lot of history and we want to create a new history with a new chapter. Who is new coach Basso?

Adriano Basso has officially been unveiled as Sheffield Wednesday’s new first team goalkeeper coach, but what do we know about the Brazillian?

As a player, Basso made more than 100 appearances in the Sky Bet Championship for clubs including Bristol City, Wolves and Hull City.

He began his career in his native Brazil with Ponte Preta before moving on to another Brazilian side, Atlético Paranaense, and then English non-league side Woking. READ FULL STORY HERE

Owls back in training – with in-demand defender present

Julian Börner has been linked with a move away from Sheffield Wednesday, but he was back at the club as pre-season got underway.

The Owls were back at Middlewood Road to undergo testing ahead on Friday morning, arriving in staggered groups as their fitness levels were tested ahead of the start of preseason proper when they head out to Wales.

Darren Moore’s side will face Celtic on July 7th at the end of a 10-day training camp out west, with the manager and his technical team looking to put the players through their paces ahead of what is likely to be a tough 2021/22 campaign navigating through League One. READ FULL STORY HERE

Former assistant Beattie gets a new job

James Beattie, the former Sheffield Wednesday coach, has been appointed as Leam Richardson's assistant manager at Wigan Athletic.

Beattie, who was United’s record signing for a long while after joining from Everton, scored 34 goals in 80 games for the Blades across two spells before joining Wednesday as Garry Monk’s assistant last season, leaving Hillsborough when Monk was sacked after three months.

He played with Wigan boss Richardson at Accrington Stanley, later replacing him as manager, and also has coaching experience at Swansea City, Leeds United, Birmingham City and Middlesbrough under Monk.

“Beattie will help provide Latics with a plethora of football knowledge through his coaching and experiences as a professional footballer,” a statement confirming his appointment read. READ FULL STORY HERE

Gardner takes new post after Owls exit

Former Sheffield Wednesday coach Craig Gardner has taken on the role of technical director at Birmingham City a few months after his Hillsborough exit.

Gardner came to Wednesday as one of Tony Pulis’ coaching staff when the former Stoke City and Middlesbrough boss took the Owls job, and then left alongside him not long afterwards when things didn’t work out.

The ex-defender has now been confirmed as Lee Bowyer’s Technical Director at Birmingham, and has been credited with playing ‘an important role’ in the recent signing of both Ryan Woods and Jordan Graham for the Blues this window. READ FULL STORY HERE
