Tom Lees is targeting a good run over Christmas to propel Sheffield Wednesday back into the top half of the Championship table.

Stuart Gray’s men lie in 13th position after recording just one victory from their last 11 league outings.

The Owls face Blackburn Rovers, Wolves, Fulham, Blackpool and Wigan before the end of the calendar year and Lees is acutely aware that the festive period is one of the most important points in the season.

He told The Star: “The Christmas period is really important.

“We have to cement ourselves in that top half over the next month.

“We will feel a lot happier if we come into January knowing we are in the top half having played everyone at least once.

“It is very tight in this league. We have seen some big teams, like Norwich and Wolves, who were flying a month or so ago, hit bad patches so things can change in a matter of games.”

The centre-half, recruited from Leeds United in the summer, was relieved Wednesday got back to winning ways last weekend.

Gray’s charges came from a goal behind to beat Wigan 2-1 at Hillsborough and Leeds has challenged the squad to build on their three-match unbeaten run, starting at Ewood Park on Saturday.

“It was fantastic for us to get the result,” he said. “It was a big game for both teams. We have been playing okay and perhaps not got the breaks we needed. It was different on Saturday and Stevie [May] took his goals really well and Attey [Nuhiu] was a big presence up front.

“Hopefully it’s a turning point for us. We have been working hard during this patch where we have not been winning games.

“Sometimes you play better and don’t win. We need keep working hard and have got to try and make it multiple wins.”
