Sheffield Wednesday defender the second out of the door as he completes permanent move to League Two club

Ash Baker has become the second young Sheffield Wednesday defender to leave the club in this January transfer window as he signed for League Two Newport County.

Baker moves on for an undisclosed fee and follows fellow youngster Jordan Thorniley out of Hillsborough after he joined Blackpool.

The former Welsh youth international made an impact in the Owls first team after he was released by Cardiff City in 2017 and went on to feature in a number of matches as Jos Luhukay attempted to blood a number of youngsters in the side.

But he has failed to follow that through and his last first team appearance came under Luhukay in December 2018. He made the bench on only one occasion this season – in the Carabao Cup win at Rotherham United – and regularly featured for the club’s under-23s.

Speaking to the Newport County website, 23-year-old Baker said: "As soon as I found out there was interest, it was a no-brainer for me to come back home to Wales and accept this great opportunity.

"I enjoyed my time at Sheffield Wenesday, but it was time for me to move on and as soon as I heard the interest from the gaffer I was straight on to my agent trying to get the deal sorted straight away.

“I'd like to say I am hard-working and love to get up and down the pitch. I can't wait to get going."

County boss Michael Flynn said: "Ash is a very important signing for us. With us losing Danny McNamara back to Millwall and Dan Leadbitter not quite back from injury, as soon as we had the chance of getting Ash in we jumped at it.

“He is somebody who will not only strengthen us, but he looked comfortable playing in the Championship last season so this is a very important signing.
