Van Aken was sent off in the Owls’ 1-0 defeat at the hands of Luton Town over the weekend, shortly before the visitors went on to score the winning goal, and now faces a three-match suspension in the Championship.
The Dutch centre back has undergone a bit of a resurgence this season since returning from his loan spell in Germany last time out, but his red card has left Garry Monk with a bit of a selection headache as he goes into Wednesday night’s game with Rotherham United a bit short in terms of options in the centre of defence.

Hide AdMonk said after the Luton loss that they weren’t sure if they would appeal the referee’s decision, saying, “I don't know. We would have to watch it back… Watching it at the time, I thought at most it was going to be a yellow. The referee was pressurised by the reaction of the players, which happens, and he gave the red card.”
It is thought, however, that the club haven’t made an appeal to get the card rescinded, meaning that Van Aken will now miss the encounters with Rotherham, Wycombe Wanderers and Bournemouth as SWFC look to try and make it back into positive points.
It remains to be seen at this point in time whether the likes of Dominic Iorfa or Tom Lees could return in defence in either of this week’s matches, but there is certainly a tough decision or two for the Wednesday boss to make.
