Sheffield Wednesday defender goes from booed to lauded as he wins player of the month vote

Voted for the by the club’s fans, it pitted Fox against the entire Wednesday squad and represents an impressive turnaround for the 26-year-old, who was booed by a section of the Owls support ahead of a home game against Luton in August.

The former Charlton man returned to the side for the 1-1 draw at Cardiff in place of Moses Odubajo and played his part in keeping two clean sheets in the following games against Stoke City and Leeds United.

Claiming 35% of the votes, Fox squeezed out defensive partner Dominic Iorfa, who received 31%. Despite sitting out Saturday’s Yorkshire derby, Julian Börner came third with 15%.

The defender said he is benefited greatly from the influence of defence-minded coaches such as Steve Bruce, Lee Bullen and of course Garry Monk in recent months, and suggested Monk’s defence-first mentality has brought the best out of him.

“It is always good to take different things from different managers,” he said. You look at the way the gaffer has been working with us recently, everyone knows their role in the team. It works perfectly for the way I play.

“He is very detailed in the work he does, whether it be in the video room or on the pitch. It is very detailed and I think the boys have bought into it.

“Personally, it was the best pre-season I have ever had and I am pretty sure everyone else feels the same way.”

Fox, who last week admitted a decision over his future at the club is ‘out of his hands’, took to social media to thank Wednesdayites for their support
