SHEFFIELD Wednesday manager Dave Jones wants to keep Stephen Bywater though he has also brought in Chris Kirkland.

Negotiations on a new contract for Bywater are continuing, the Owls boss told The Star.

If Bywater re-signs then the club will have four keepers: Bywater, Kirkland, Arron Jameson and Nicky Weaver, which is the same number that they had this season.

Richard O’Donnell was released but Jameson yesterday signed a new two-year deal and Weaver has another year left.

With such strong competition for places, Jameson could well be allowed to go out on loan to broaden his match experience.

The 22-year-old was an unused sub 13 times this season.

Pleased to have landed Kirkland, Jones told The Star: “Chris is a top-quality goalkeeper; hopefully he’s over his injury worries.

“It’s a fantastic coup for us if it comes off as we expect. We’re negotiating with Stephen Bywater anyway, but it was important to do what we’ve done.”

Jones has also said that no-one is guaranteed a place and competition for places will be fair.

Contract talks are continuing with Mark Beevers and Jermaine Johnson.
