The EFL announced on Wednesday that the club’s 12-point penalty had been cut to six points following a successful appeal – giving Garry Monk’s side a huge boost in their bid to climb away from the foot of the Sky Bet Championship.

News of the penalty reduction came less than 24 hours after the Owls had defeated AFC Bournemouth 1-0 at Hillsborough, their first win at home since February and also put an end to their four-match losing streak.

And Lowe, who was part of the squad which pipped bitter rivals Sheffield United to promotion to the Championship in 2012 and is now Plymouth Argyle manager, is backing Monk’s men to beat the drop.

“It’s a lifeline for Sheffield Wednesday it really is, but if they had won their last two games, they’d have had those six points,” said Lowe, speaking on the EFL Show on Quest last night.

“But look, they’re a huge club and a team I used to play for, and I loved my time there, great fanbase. But the fans want to see something now, something exciting.

“With Garry Monk and his huge three points against Bournemouth, and with that deduction halving, I think they can do it.”
