Exclusive:Sheffield Wednesday move on contract talks with transfer work ongoing
Work is taking place at Sheffield Wednesday as things move forward towards a busy summer transfer window.
Things are moving behind the scenes at Sheffield Wednesday, The Star understands, with another round of contract talks having taken place in the last week as the club looks to prepare itself for a busy summer squad rebuild.
A number of players are the subject of ongoing discussions including senior figures Svante Ingelsson, Max Lowe and Liam Cooper, as well as hot prospect Will Grainger, who furthered his case for more regular first team involvement with a handful of eye-catching performances towards the end of last season.
Youngsters Mackenzie Maltby, Gui Siqueira, Bruno Fernandes, Reece Johnson, Devlan Moses, Jack Phillips and Jarvis Thornton are all also the subject of talks over a possible new deal.
It’s understood that after exploratory discussions since the end of the season, a round of further talks took place with the representatives of a number of players last week, including some of those senior men. As previously reported by The Star, talks with Grainger are believed to be progressing nicely and have accelerated in the past week or so. Sources suggest other discussions have taken place but will likely require more work as things continue.
In the case of Owls player of the year Ingelsson, Wednesday activated a year’s contract extension on his deal but have sought to offer fresh terms to extend his stay amid continuing strong interest from the likes of Stoke City.
The transfer window opens on June 15 and further work has been undertaken as the club looks to press on with its rebuild ahead of what will be a busy few months. The Star has reason to believe the re-signing of club legend Barry Bannan remains a very real possibility, while other targets are being outlined.
The Star is told that at the time of writing incoming sporting director Simon Wilson has not yet officially started in his role at Wednesday, with the announcement of his confirmed arrival expected in due course. As reported by The Wednesday Word, plans are being secured on the club’s pre-season plans, with an expectation that they will return to a format of a European trip alongside the now customary training camp at St George’s Park.
