Sheffield Wednesday have nailed down the services of Northern Ireland youth goalkeeper Pierce Charles, confirming the 17-year-old has signed a deal to stay on at the club.

The former Manchester City prospect, who joined Wednesday in July last year having been released by the Premier League giants, has made a huge impression in his short time at S6 and has been outlined as one to watch in the Owls academy.

The youngster has sent a great deal of time training with Wednesday’s senior set-up, most notably when he was invited on their pre-season training camp in Portugal this summer, and even spent time with the Northern Ireland seniors during a recent international break.

Sheffield Wednesday have sealed a new contract for young goalkeeper Pierce Charles, a Northern Ireland international at youth level.

Having just turned 17 in July, this new deal is Charles’ first under professional terms and sees him join fellow international stopper – England’s Jack Hall – in securing his future to Wednesday.

With only David Stockdale, Cameron Dawson and Luke Jackson at the club there is a clear route to first team football for the young goalkeepers.

Speaking about Charles last month, Wednesday first team boss Darren Moore said: “What I like about him is he has got a wonderful work ethic, humbleness and focus with him for one so young.

“Credit to him that he trains in and around the first team on a day to day basis facing [Michael] Smith, [Lee] Gregory, [Callum] Paterson, [Mallik] Wilks, [Alex] Mighten and [Josh] Windass.

“That's a calibre of players where he has got to get his angles right in goal if he's going to stop shots from them.”
